What We Do

BIO (life) + KINETICS (movement) = Life Through Movement

A Biokineticist is a health professional registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) who operates within both the pathogenic (illness) and fortogenic (wellbeing promotion) health paradigms.

This specialized profession leverages exercise as its primary treatment modality. Through individualized testing, Biokineticists develop scientifically-based exercise programs to treat and prevent non-communicable diseases and provide final-phase orthopedic pre-and postoperative rehabilitation. They are essential in promoting physical activity and preventing diseases and orthopedic injuries across various populations, including children, the elderly, and pre-and post-natal individuals.

“Physical activity as a therapeutic modality has been prescribed by health professionals for various ailments since ancient times.”

Research supports the positive impact of physical activity on health, and initiatives like the “Exercise is Medicine” program in the USA advocate for exercise to be prescribed similarly to medication. Physical activity plays a crucial role in health promotion, and biokinetics, which utilizes scientifically prescribed exercise, serves both pathogenic and fortogenic health paradigms.

In the pathogenic paradigm, the focus is on the presence or prevention of illness, where pathology is key. The fortogenic paradigm, in contrast, emphasizes enhancing strengths without the threat of pathology, focusing on overall health improvement.
